About the Event

The Fundamentals of Fitness: What is strength training & healthy eating all about?

Let’s POP the myths of lifting weights & dieting!

Hi, I'm Meryl the founder of POP Fitness, a certified athletic therapist with a Master's degree in Education. I have been teaching all things health, fitness, injury assessment & prevention related at the University level for the past 19 years. In addition, I have coached over 100 female clients who were new to fitness on the benefits of strength training and whom have seen incredible progress in their motivation, stress & energy levels, strength, and body composition. Many of these women struggled with the 'fear' of strength training...I was one of them! When I first started getting interested in fitness years ago I was intimidated by the gym. I stuck to using machines because I had no idea whether I should use a dumbbell or a barbell. Eventually through hiring a trainer and education I became confident & empowered to walk into any gym!

I want to know your struggles...have you always wanted to learn what strength training is all about but have been reluctant to step away from your treadmill, elliptical, or yoga class to take a closer look?

Does my story resonate with you? Do you feel intimidated by strength training, the equipment involved, and the gym environment. You may have asked yourself “How do I know when to use a dumbbell, barbell, kettlebell, or medicine ball?” “Can I lift weights without getting bulky?” “What exercises are the best?” Most importantly “How do I get started?”

If you have asked yourself these questions and are curious to learn more about the importance of strength training then my Fundamentals of Fitness workshop is for you!

In this hands-on workshop I introduce women to the weight room and the basics of strength training. We will cover a variety of topics including:

  • Proper warm-up
  • Fundamentals of strength training (including breathing technique, muscle action, exercise tempo, and more).
  • Proper technique & form for a variety of common bodyweight, dumbbell, and cable exercises
  • Exercise application including how to scale exercises to your appropriate level, and how much weight you should be lifting

We will also complete a short & efficient workout to tie in what we learned AND you will leave with a workout program to continue with over the summer!

Of course we have to have our peanut butter to go with our jelly, so to complement our strength training session we will break down the basics of nutrition. The classroom session will:

  • Debunk common nutrition myths
  • Discuss diet fads
  • Review calories & macronutrients
  • Discuss how to eat moderately & mindfully.

My goal when you leave my 4 hour Fundamentals of Fitness workshop is for you to feel strong, confident, and capable to get started or continue on your own fitness journey!
